Stainless Steel Adapter with Internal Thread

The bayonet adapter connects two components of a fluid-carrying system and secures them firmly. The bayonet mount is located at the bottom, and an internal thread for the connection is at the top. In metal 3D printing, it is produced in one piece from 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel; the thread is then CNC-machined.

If a suitable adapter is missing

In fluid-handling systems, components are often connected using adapters that are not available as catalog parts. For custom systems, test benches, or retrofits, only a few of these are usually needed, and it isn’t worth the expense to make a casting mold. If the adapter is turned and milled from solid stock, the bayonet mount with its windows and the shoulders on the shaft require a great deal of effort.

At the same time, the adapter must withstand forces and be resistant to the fluid. A plastic part is usually not sufficient here.

This is where a metal 3D-printed adapter can help.

The Solution: A Bayonet Adapter Made with Metal 3D Printing

The adapter is built using laser powder bed fusion from 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel, with a layer thickness of 40 µm. The bayonet mount, window, steps, and threaded hole are created in a single operation. Printing this component takes about 1.5 hours.

The adapter is then stress-relieved and sandblasted. The internal thread is subsequently CNC-turned to ensure a clean fit. Using the CAD model, the adapter can be reproduced at any time in the future without the need to keep parts in stock.

Manufacturing Overview

The specifications apply to the adapter shown. For other components, they depend on size, geometry, and quantity.

What the 3D-printed bayonet adapter makes possible

Bayonet and thread in a single part

The bayonet mount, shaft, and threaded connection are manufactured as a single piece. There are no joints that need to be welded, bolted, or inspected.

Cost-effective even for a single item

Even without a casting mold, production is still worthwhile for individual parts and small production runs—for example, for test benches, custom systems, or modifications.

Custom Threads

The internal thread is CNC-machined after the part is pressed. This ensures that the fitting fits precisely with its counterpart in the system.
